Security Message for U.S. Citizens:

Planned Demonstration at Shwedagon Pagoda

A demonstration is scheduled for Sunday, October 29, 12:00 P.M. in downtown Rangoon. Protestors plan to gather east of Shwedagon Pagoda near Shwe Gone Daing flyover and will march along Kabar Aye Pagoda Road to City Hall. The demonstration is expected to last for several hours. The aim of the protest is to show support for the Burmese security services.

U.S. Embassy staff members have been advised to avoid this protest.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

A map of the planned protest route is attached.
