Security Alert – U. S. Embassy Rangoon, Burma (19 March 2019)

Location: Hsipaw Township, Shan State, Burma

Event: Hiking and trekking outside of Hsipaw town is dangerous due to active armed conflict and land mines.  Multiple armed groups occupy areas near Hsipaw, and there are frequent clashes among the groups and with the Burmese military.  Areas of armed conflict around Hsipaw frequently change without warning.  Land mines are not marked, and both local residents and foreign tourists have been severely injured by land mines in recent years.  Due to these threats, the Burmese government designates areas outside Hsipaw town as “off limits areas,” but local authorities do not regularly enforce this travel restriction.  Legal penalties for foreigners entering an off limits area without permission include jail time.

Actions to Take:

  • Reconsider all travel to Hsipaw Township due to active armed conflict and land mines.
  • If you do go to Hsipaw, do not leave Hsipaw town and do not go hiking without a guide.
  • If you are injured, seek medical attention immediately.
