Security Alert: Military Detained NLD Party Leaders

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN RANGOON IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN BURMA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

U.S. Embassy Rangoon is aware that the Burmese military has detained some political leaders, including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.  Internet is not available in certain areas throughout the country, including in some parts of Rangoon.  There is potential for political and civil unrest in Burma and we will continue to monitor the situation.

We advise all U.S. citizens in Burma to take necessary precautions, including:

  • Avoiding unnecessary travel
  • Reviewing your personal security plan
  • Remaining aware of your surroundings
  • Monitoring local news for updates

Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, which can become violent at any time without notice.  Be vigilant and keep a low profile.  If stopped, comply with authorities.
