U.S. Embassy Statement on the Visit of Assistant Secretary Stilwell October 27-30, 2019
Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell reaffirmed the long-term U.S. commitment to support the aspirations of the people of Myanmar for greater peace, prosperity, freedoms, and democracy during his October 27-30 visit to Myanmar. During meetings with government, community, and civil society leaders in Yangon, Sittwe, and Nay Pyi Taw, Assistant Secretary Stilwell underscored that the United States continues to engage with the people of Myanmar as a partner and friend.
During his meeting with State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Assistant Secretary Stilwell discussed issues of shared concern, including resolving underlying grievances in conflict areas as part of ongoing U.S. support for Myanmar’s democratic transition and economic transformation. He also met with International Cooperation Minister Kyaw Tin, Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Minister Thaung Tun, Defense Minister Lt Gen Sein Win, as well as diverse leaders from civil society and local communities, to express support for economic reforms and the need for respect for human rights.
Assistant Secretary Stilwell’s visit to Myanmar is part of a regional trip that includes visits to Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Republic of Korea, and China from October 24-November 7, 2019.
