Message for U.S. Citizens: Updated Information on Flight Availability

20 April 2020

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN RANGOON IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN BURMA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Extension of Commercial Flight Ban

The Burmese government extended its ban on all incoming international flights until April 30.  The measure will not apply to relief, cargo, medical evacuation, and other specially approved flights.

MAI Flights to Seoul Continue

Myanmar Airlines International (MAI) has relief flights from Yangon to Seoul scheduled for April 23 and April 30.  Passengers seeking to book these flights may need to book the leg to Seoul with MAI and their onward leg to the United States with another airline separately.  Transits of less than 24 hours in Seoul are permitted, as long as passengers do not depart the airport.

Transit via Tokyo on ANA No Longer Feasible

According to All Nippon Airways (ANA) representatives, transiting via Tokyo to the United States on ANA is no longer feasible with their current flight schedule.  ANA flights from Yangon to Tokyo from April 20 onward are scheduled to depart Yangon at 1:30 P.M. and arrive at Narita International Airport at 10:35 P.M.  Narita’s airport closes at 11 P.M., and passengers cannot remain in the airport after closure.  As passengers will be unable to transit before the airport closes, they will need to enter Japan and begin a mandated 14-day quarantine.

No Additional Repatriation Flights

The U.S. Embassy coordinated a repatriation flight for U.S. citizens on April 6, 2020.  There are no plans for additional repatriation flights.

Normal Consular Operations

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Rangoon has resumed operations from 7:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. on Monday through Friday.  Routine non-immigrant and immigrant visa appointments remain suspended until further notice.  Routine U.S. citizen services continue without interruption.
