Message for U.S. Citizens: Update – Bangkok Transit and International Flight Availability from Yangon

25 March 2020

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN RANGOON IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN BURMA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

The Royal Thai Government has temporarily suspended its requirement for a COVID-negative medical certificate and proof of insurance for transit passengers through Bangkok with less than 24 hours in the airport.  These passengers will still need a fit-to-fly certificate to transit.  Please visit the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok’s website for updates.

There are few remaining flights departing Myanmar to international hubs.  Currently, U.S. citizens seeking to return to the U.S. should explore transiting China (Guangzhou, Shanghai, Kunming), Doha, Tokyo, and Bangkok.

Information on specific flights changes frequently, often without notice.  Also, though flights to a city may be available, tickets on that flight may be sold out.  We are also seeing several last-minute flight cancellations.  Check directly with airlines for flight availability.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens seeking to depart Myanmar book their outbound flight directly with operating airlines.

We seek to understand how many U.S. citizens wish to depart Myanmar but are unable to do so, in order to provide information in the event that new flights to international hubs open up.  Please input the following information into Microsoft Forms using this link.
