THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN RANGOON IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN BURMA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.
Embassy Operations During Thingyan:
The U.S. Embassy will be closed for consular services from April 10 until April 19 due to the Thingyan holiday and the Yangon Regional Government’s stay-at-home directive. We will re-open for consular services on April 20, although routine non-immigrant and immigrant visa appointments remain suspended until further notice.
For emergencies involving a U.S. citizen please call +95-1-753-6509 from outside Burma or 01-753-6509 from within Burma and ask to speak to a duty officer. We will not be responding to emails sent to ACSRangoon@state.gov during this time.
Government ‘Stay-at-Home’ Orders:
Yangon Regional Government’s stay-at-home directive urges residents not to leave their homes except to procure food and medicine between April 10 and 19. States and Regions across Burma, including down to the township and ward level, are also issuing their own quarantine directives, travel restrictions, and other measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Ward/township administrators can directly refer people violating these directives for criminal prosecution. Foreigners, including U.S. citizens, have been arrested and sentenced to 3-6 months in prison for violating local directives. To find information on local directives and restrictions in your area, seek guidance from your landlord, hotel, or your local ward or township administrator.
Commercial ‘Relief Flights’ Continue:
There are remaining flights with available seats departing Myanmar for international hubs. Currently, U.S. citizens seeking to return to the U.S. should explore transiting Seoul and Tokyo.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens seeking to depart Myanmar book their outbound flight directly with operating airlines.
We encourage you to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest updates in your country, as well as the days and hours of American Citizen Services.
