Message for U.S. Citizens: International Flight Availability from Yangon

19 March 2020

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN RANGOON IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN BURMA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Due to increasing immigration restrictions instituted by countries around the world and decreased flight demand, international outbound flight availability from Yangon has decreased in recent weeks.  The Embassy closely monitors daily flight availability and hopes that this information allows you to carefully evaluate the current situation.

An important note: this information changes daily and is based on information the Embassy has gathered from airlines.  This information could change without notice.  Also, though flights to a city may be available, tickets on that flight may be sold out.  We are also seeing several last-minute flight cancellations. Check directly with airlines for flight availability.

Prior to March 2020, 236 flights left Yangon each week bound for Seoul, Taipei, Dubai, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

Based on data collected at the end of the day on March 18, 2020:

  • By March 22, 81% (190) of original flights to those destinations are projected to remain operational.
  • By March 29, 72% (169) of the original flights to those destinations are projected to remain operational.
  • By April 5,  65% (153) of the original flights to those destinations are projected to remain operational.

Flights to Bangkok currently represent 56% of international flights departing Yangon (106 of 190).  By April 5, it is projected that flights to Bangkok will represent 64% of international flights departing Yangon (98 out of 153).

The Embassy does not collect this data for international departures from Nay Pyi Taw or Mandalay.
