Message for U.S. Citizens: Domestic Travel Difficulties

23 April 2020

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN RANGOON IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN BURMA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Domestic travel throughout Burma is increasingly difficult.  Intra-provincial bus service is restricted.  The number of domestic flights has been severely reduced.  Many townships, districts, states, and regions have issued quarantine orders, curfews, and stay-at-home restrictions.  The latest example is a Mandalay Region government announcement of a mandatory 21-day facility quarantine and 7-day home quarantine for persons entering Mandalay Region from states and regions with COVID-19 positive cases.  Persons entering Mandalay from Burma’s states and regions without COVID-19 cases are subject to a medical exam and may be quarantined.  Hakka and Nay Pyi Taw have also issued similar orders.

If you decide to travel domestically in Burma, research quarantine requirements of your destination and transit points.

If a Myanmar government official orders you to quarantine, you should comply with the order.  Violating a lawful quarantine order can result in criminal penalties, including 3-6 months in jail.
