Message for U.S. Citizens: Burmese New Year Festival (Thingyan)

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN RANGOON IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION THROUGH THE AMERICAN LIAISON NETWORK AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN BURMA. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD.

In observance of the Burmese New Year Festival (Thingyan), the Embassy of the United States of America in Rangoon will be closed for routine consular services from Monday, April 15, 2019 thru Wednesday, April 17, 2019.  We will resume normal operations on Thursday, April 18, 2019.

During this time, we will provide no routine phone or email services.  In the event of an emergency involving a U.S. citizen, please contact (01) 536-509 to speak with a duty officer.

For U.S. citizens that plan to enjoy the festival in Burma, we want to offer you the following safety and security tips:

  • If driving, keep doors locked and be careful with pedestrians walking in the street.
  • Don’t drink and drive.  If drinking, call a taxi and make sure your driver is sober.
  • Keep your valuables secure to avoid pick-pocketing, especially around water stations (pandals).

From all of us at the U.S. Embassy, we wish you a happy Thingyan!
