Scholarship programs are sponsored by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and include programs such as Fulbright, Humphrey, UGrad, SEALYP, and SUSI, among many others. The programs provide a fully-funded opportunity to:

  • study, teach, and/or conduct research
  • exchange ideas
  • find solutions to shared international concerns
  • learn about the United States

The U.S. Embassy in Yangon is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for the Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship Program for the academic year 2024.

WHAT: The program gives full scholarship funding to students from Myanmar seeking a Master’s Degree at a university in the United States of America.

WHO: Participants are recruited through a merit-based, open competition and chosen based upon their leadership potential, academic excellence, maturity, ability to adjust successfully to life in the United States, and potential to promote mutual understanding between the United States and the people of other countries.

To be eligible for the Fulbright scholarship, applicants:

  • must be from Myanmar; individuals of other nationalities are not eligible to apply in Myanmar;
  • must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (applicants with advanced degree, e.g. Masters, are also eligible);
  • must have a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;
  • must have a minimum TOEFL score of 575 (paper based) or 90 (internet-based) (students must take a screening test conducted by the U.S. Embassy if they don’t have a TOEFL score, and must take the official TOEFL test after being nominated);
  • should have relevant degrees or professional experience in their proposed field of study;
  • should have little or no previous experience traveling or living in the United States;
  • should not have a degree from a U.S. university or be enrolled in a U.S. degree program.

IMPORTANT: All grantees are expected to return to their home countries for at least two years at the conclusion of their grant in compliance with the J-visa requirements.

Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarships provide tuition and related academic fees, a monthly stipend for room, board and incidental expenses, supplemental health and accident benefits, a book and equipment allowance, international/domestic travel allowance, and the opportunity to attend Fulbright enrichment activities.

The U.S. Embassy in Yangon is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Scholarship Program for academic year 2024.

WHAT:  The Fulbright FLTA Program is a nine-month, fully funded, non-degree program that provides young teachers of English an opportunity to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the society and culture of the United States, while teaching their native language (Myanmar) to U.S. students. Participants will take U.S. university classes, and at the same time serve as teaching assistants for their native language.

WHO:  Selection will be based on the applicants’ leadership skills, proven ability to motivate students to learn, and interest in teaching their native language (Myanmar) and culture to U.S. students.

To be eligible for the Fulbright FLTA scholarship, applicants:

  • must be citizens of Myanmar; individuals of other nationalities are not eligible to apply in Myanmar;
  • must be residing in their home country throughout the nomination and selection process;
  • must be teachers of English, or in training to become teachers of English, no older than 30 years of age;
  • must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (advanced degrees, e.g. Masters, are also eligible);
  • must have a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;
  • must be proficient in English, with a minimum TOEFL PBT score of 550 or TOEFL IBT score of 79-80 or an IELTS score of 6.0;
  • should have little or no previous experience traveling or living in the United States; and
  • should not have a degree from a U.S. university or be enrolled in a U.S. degree program

The U.S. Embassy in Yangon is pleased to announce the annual competition for the academic year 2024 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program.

WHAT:  A one-year funded program that sends accomplished professionals to the United States for graduate-level academic coursework and related professional experiences.  Fellows are selected based on their potential for national leadership and commitment to public service in either the public or private sector.  During their fellowship, Humphrey Fellows participate in non-degree study at approximately 13 host campuses across the United States and complete at least six weeks of a professional affiliation at a U.S.-based governmental, non-governmental, private sector, or international organization.

WHO:  Experienced professionals, scholars, faculty, and others with at least five years professional experience.

To be eligible for a Humphrey Fellowship, applicants:

  • must be from Myanmar and university graduates;
  • must have at least five years full-time professional experience in the relevant field and should be interested in the policy aspects of the field of specialization;
  • must have demonstrated leadership qualities, a record of public service and potential for professional advancement;
  • must have written permission from their employers to participate in the program, should they be selected;
  • must have a minimum TOEFL score of 525 (paper based) or 71 (internet-based) (students must take a screening test conducted by the U.S. Embassy if they don’t have a TOEFL score, and must take the official TOEFL test after being nominated); and
  • should have little or no previous experience studying or working in the United States.

The Humphrey Fellowship covers: international/domestic travel costs, tuition and university fees, accident/health insurance, monthly stipend, and funding for educational materials and professional activities. The Humphrey Program does NOT provide financial support for accompanying dependents.

The 2024 – 2025 Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program will bring international secondary-level teachers to the United States for a six-week program to take academic seminars for professional development at a host university and to observe and share their expertise with teachers and students at the host university and at local secondary schools.

General academic seminars focused on new teaching methodologies, student-centered learning, content-based instruction, lesson planning, and instructional technology training for teachers. Thematic cohorts also available on gender education, climate education, and media literacy.

A practicum of at least 40 hours with a U.S. partner teacher in local secondary schools.

A variety of relevant professional development and cultural activities.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Current secondary-level (middle and high school), full-time teachers of English, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), math, science, foreign language, social studies, journalism, or communications, including special education teachers in those subjects, at institutions serving primarily a local population
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience by the start of the program, with a preference for those who have completed at least five years of full-time teaching
  • Demonstrated oral and written English language proficiency
  • Citizen and resident of a participating location
  • Other requirements as indicated in the application

An independent review committee will be convened to select participants for the program through a merit-based competition.

The U.S. Embassy in Yangon is pleased to announce the FULBRIGHT U.S.–ASEAN Visiting Scholar Program.

WHAT: Conduct scholarly, professional research and lecture in the United States for 3-4 months during the spring of 2025; seek opportunities to provide an ASEAN perspective through guest lectures, seminars, or participation in academic or professional conferences.

WHO: Open to staff of think tanks, NGOs, and all professionals in the private sector.

FIELDS OF STUDY: Fields that support ASEAN initiatives including supporting economic integration, expansion of maritime cooperation, promotion of opportunities for women, and addressing transnational challenges (including regional collaboration on issues like curbing human trafficking, countering violent extremism, preventing wildlife trafficking or promoting sustainable fishing). These fields of study can include: Education, Financial Market Integration, Food Technology, Information Sciences, Journalism, Law, Public Administration, Public/Global Health, and Trade and Investment. Projects to be selected should be regional in scope and/or have clear implications for the entire ASEAN region.

Eligibility

An applicant:

– must be a Myanmar citizen;

– must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher;

– must be proficient in English (minimum TOEFL 550). Note: You do not need a TOEFL score to apply for this program, but you may be asked to take the TOEFL during the application process;

– should have relevant degrees and significant professional experience in the proposed field of study;

– should have little or no previous experience studying or working in the United States;

– must be able to take leave from home institution or post.

The U.S. Embassy Rangoon is pleased to announce the 2024-2025 Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (Global UGRAD).

The Program seeks to provide students from under-represented communities with a semester-long educational exchange experience in U.S. colleges or universities to strengthen their leadership, professional skills, and commitment to community service, while exploring U.S. values and culture.

WHAT IS UGRAD? 

  • Scholarship for one semester of study in the United States
  • Undergraduate, non-degree, full-time study program

 

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must be from Myanmar.
  2. Applicants must be studying undergraduate programs in Myanmar, having completed a minimum of their first semester of study. Applicants must have one full year remaining at their home institution after the Global UGRAD Program year.
  3. Applicants should demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.
  4. Applicants must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 48iBT to be considered. Students who score between 48-60 will be considered for the virtual English Language Training prior to the exchange portion of the program. Students must achieve a minimum score of 61 to be eligible to participate in the exchange portion of the program in the United States.
  5. Preference will be given to those who have had little or NO experience in the United States or outside of their home countries.
  6. Applicants are required to return directly to their home country after the completion of the program.
  7. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the program’s start.

 

IMPORTANT 

  • A TOEFL score is not required at the time of application; however, a TOEFL score is required for participation in the program. Eligible students must take a TOEFL screening test conducted by the U.S. Embassy if they don’t have a valid TOEFL score and must take the official TOEFL test after being nominated. Students must return to Myanmar upon completion of the program and may not extend their stay for degree study.
  • Prospective participants should request their academic transcripts and two letters of recommendation (one academic and one non-academic) as soon as possible as they will not be able to add additional documents to their application after the December 15th deadline.

The U.S. Embassy in Yangon is pleased to announce the 2024 Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program (SEAYLP).

SEAYLP is a three-week exchange program to the United States focused on leadership and youth development.

The exchange will take place in Dekalb, Illinois from April 20 – May 12, 2024, and will include site visits, workshops, homestays, and a study tour. Participants will implement follow-on projects in their home communities after the program. The program welcome applications from both student participants and adult chaperones.

 

Student Eligibility:

  • Be 15–17 years old as of April 20, 2024
  • Be high school or first-year college students currently enrolled in schools and universities in Myanmar
  • Have interest in civic action and community service
  • Have strong academic and social skills and leadership potential
  • Have an appropriate level of maturity, open-mindedness, and adventure for an international exchange program

 

Adult Chaperone Eligibility:

  • Be between 30–40 years old
  • Be teachers or community leaders who work with youth
  • Be proficient in English and hold a university degree
  • Have experience mentoring youth and demonstrated commitment to working with young people and interest in their professional development
  • Be committed to working with SEAYLP participants after their return from the United States
  • Be committed to the goals and ideals of the program, including civic leadership, diversity, environmental sustainability and fostering positive regional and global interactions.

 

Program goals:

  • To promote mutual understanding between and among people from the United States and Southeast Asian countries
  • To develop a sense of civic responsibility and commitment to community development
  • To develop leadership skills
  • To foster relationships among youth from different backgrounds
  • To focus on leadership and youth development, to explore shared challenges faced by the United States and ASEAN member countries.

 

 

Exchange activities:

The program will foster collaboration among ASEAN youth through cross-cultural experiences. Exchange activities will include workshops, interactive sessions, diplomacy simulations, leadership training, and team-building exercises. Extracurricular activities round out the program with volunteer service opportunities as well as site visits to relevant organizations in host communities. The adult participants will have sessions with adult peers designed to help foster networking, and leadership and civic education programs when they return home. All participants will engage in homestays with American families and study tours to Chicago, IL and Washington, D.C.

The program includes a strong emphasis on follow-on projects. Participants will be taught to develop plans for follow-on activities and are expected to implement them in their schools and communities upon return home. Northern Illinois University (NIU) will support follow-on activities and may provide funding for mini-grants.

WHAT: The SUSI for Secondary School Educators program is an intensive post-graduate level academic program with integrated study tours whose purpose is to provide foreign secondary educators and administrators the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions. The goal of SUSI is to strengthen curricula and to enhance the quality of teaching about the United States in secondary schools and other academic institutions abroad. The program will include a four-week academic residency component and a one-week integrated study tour between late May and early June 2024.

WHO: Highly-motivated and experienced secondary school educators (including teachers, administrators, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, ministry of education officials, and others).

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

  • be from Myanmar and between the ages of 30-50, highly motivated, experience secondary school teachers and administrators whose students are approximately 14-18 years of age.
  • hold a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • must be proficient in English
  • should have professional experience in the proposed field of study
  • should have little or no previous experience studying or working in the United States
  • be able to take leave from home institution or post

The U.S. Embassy in Yangon is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for the 2024 Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for Scholars.

WHAT: The SUSIs for Scholars are intensive post-graduate level academic programs that provide foreign university faculty and other scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions. The program goal is to strengthen curricula and to enhance the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions abroad.

The Institutes will take place at various colleges, universities, and academic institutions throughout the United States over the course of five-to-six weeks beginning in or after June 2024. Each Institute includes a four-week academic residency component and up to two weeks of an integrated study tour. Selected participants must attend all lectures and organized activities and complete assigned readings. Institute curriculum will not formally address teaching methodology and pedagogical methods.

WHO: Experienced university faculty, scholars, and other related professionals. Applicants must apply for only one of the following institutes.

INSTITUTE DESCRIPTIONS:

The Institute on American Politics and Political Thought will provide a deeper understanding on how intellectual and political movements have influenced American political institutions and American democracy; explore the shaping of American identity and the chemistry between that identity and U.S. history, politics, and the democratic process; cover a broad range of American experiences that have influenced and been influenced by American national identity; and will provide a deeper understanding of major currents in U.S. political thought, from the colonial period to the present, and explore contemporary U.S. political and social debates and public policy, relating them back to U.S. political thought and American identity.

The Institute on Contemporary American Literature will provide a deeper understanding of U.S. society and culture, past and present, through an examination of contemporary American literature; will examine how major contemporary writers, schools, and movements reflect the U.S. literary canon; will also explore the diverse communities and voices that constitute the American literary landscape and expose participants to writers who are establishing new directions for American literature; and will cover a variety of contemporary American writers and writing and suggest how the themes explored reflect larger currents within contemporary U.S. society and culture.

The Institute on Journalism and Media will provide a deeper understanding of the roles that journalism and the media play in U.S. society; will examine the role of journalists in recognizing and preventing disinformation and will explore strategies for media and information literacy to counter disinformation; will examine best practices in journalism by discussing the rights and responsibilities of the media in a democratic society, including editorial independence, journalistic ethics, legal constraints, and international journalism. The program will also highlight the impact of technology in journalism, including the influence of the digital economy, globalization of the news media, and other changes that are transforming the profession.

The Institute on U.S. Culture, Identity, and Society will provide a deeper understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions through the lens of diversity and national unity; will examine the ethnic, racial, social, economic, political, and religious contexts in which various cultures have manifested in U.S. society while focusing on the ways in which these cultures have influenced social movements and American identity throughout U.S. history. The program will draw from a diverse disciplinary base and will itself provide a model of how a foreign university might approach the study of American culture and society.

The Institute on U.S. Economics and Sustainable Development will provide a deeper understanding of key components and structures of the U.S. economy. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the program will explore various topics of socioeconomics; how financial institutions, investors, and businesses interact to support sustainable economic development, innovation, and growth; and increasing diverse and equitable employment through institutional regulation, social inclusion strategies, and private and public policies. Throughout the Institute, participants will examine the interplay of climate change, U.S. business innovation, corporate regulation, entrepreneurship, and economic theory; and will have opportunities to learn about key institutions and stakeholders in the U.S. economy and meet with a diverse range of business leaders and small business owners, among others.

The Institute on U.S. Foreign Policy will provide a deeper understanding of new approaches to U.S. foreign policy and how U.S. foreign policy is formulated and implemented; will include a historical review of significant events, individuals, and philosophies that have shaped U.S. foreign policy. The program will explain the role of key influences on U.S. foreign policy including the executive and legislative branches of government, the media, the U.S. public, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and multilateral institutions; and will also examine the current U.S. foreign policymaking landscape and emerging trends that are shaping policy.

ELIGIBILITY

An applicant:

  • must be from Myanmar and between the ages of 30 – 50
  • must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • must be a highly motivated, experienced scholar and professional generally from institutions of higher education or research focused organizations
  • must be proficient in English
  • should have substantial knowledge of the thematic area of a related field
  • should have little or no previous experience studying or working in the United States
  • must be able to take leave from home institution or post

  • have strong academic and social skills and have leadership potential
  • have appropriate level of maturity, open-mindedness, and sociability for an international exchange program

 

Adult chaperones Eligibility

  • Be between 30 – 40 years old
  • Be teachers or community leaders who work with youth
  • Be proficient in English and hold a university degree
  • Have experience mentoring youth and demonstrate a commitment to working with young people and interested in their professional development
  • Be committed to working with MYLP participants after their return from the United States

Exchange activities:

Exchange activities will include site visits, workshops, interactive sessions, diplomacy simulations, leadership training, team-building exercises, study tour and homestays with American families. Extracurricular activities including volunteer service opportunities and interactive site visits with relevant organizations in host communities will round out the program.

The adult participants will have special sessions with adult peers designed to help foster leadership and civic education programs when they return home. Participants will develop a plan for a follow-on activity during the exchange and are expected to implement it in their school or community upon their return home.

WHAT

The program aims to provide professional experience and training that will nurture participants’ talent and prepare them for leadership positions in their businesses, communities and society in general as they return to their countries.

WHO

Participants selected for the program will be mid-level emerging leaders in small or start-up business ventures, business administration, government, NGOs, business education, incubation hubs, community training programs, or social entrepreneurship in Myanmar.

ELIGIBILITY

  • English-language fluency and computer-literate
  • Aged 25-40
  • Relevant experience and expertise in the small business/entrepreneurship/economic empowerment profession
  • Clear understanding of economic empowerment issues that affect your community
  • Interested in experiencing hands-on the activities in a U.S. business or economic empowerment organization
  • Committed to the importance of a sustainable and empowering business sector in a democracy
  • Plan to return to your organization following completion of the program
  • Little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States
  • Commitment to hosting a U.S. participant for 10-20 days in Myanmar (all activities are paid for by the program, not by you or your organization).

The Community Solutions Program (CSP) is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and implemented by IREX.

The Community Solutions Program (CSP) is a year-long professional leadership development program for established community leaders working to improve their communities by addressing issues related to the democracy and human rights, environment, peace and conflict resolution, and women and gender. CSP includes a four-month hands-on U.S. practicum, personalized leadership coaching and training through a graduate level leadership curriculum, and a six-month follow-on community project fellows implement in their home country.

Community leaders will be selected to participate in the program that includes:

  • Four-month fellowship in the United States: Community Solutions fellows are matched with host organizations throughout the U.S. where they complete a four-month, hands-on professional practicum to advance their technical skills and expertise.
  • Community Leadership Institute: Community Solutions fellows participate in the Community Leadership Institute, a graduate-level leadership curriculum designed to strengthen their leadership and management skills. The Institute includes face-to-face trainings, online courses, professional coaching, and networking.
  • Community-based initiatives: While in the U.S. and with the support of their U.S. host organization, Community Solutions fellows design and plan a community development initiative or project to carry out after they return home. Once the fellows depart the U.S., they implement a six-month follow-on project in their home communities.

2023 – 2024 Community Engagement and Exchange (CEE) Program

The Community Engagement and Exchange (CEE) Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and implemented by IREX, supports emerging community leaders, ages 21-28, from around the world working at the private, and non-profit sectors to address issues of public concern and improve the quality of community. CEE fellows participate in a three-month exchange in the United States to work with a host organization. 

 

During the practicum experience, CEE fellows work directly with U.S. community-based organizations focused on addressing similar civil society issues. Fellows strengthen their own capacity and share their own knowledge and experience with their host community. Fellows will also participate in a comprehensive civic engagement and leadership curriculum and learn values-based approaches to problem-solving rooted in collaborative and inclusive decision making, discourse, and democratic principles.

 

Tentative Schedule (subject to change due to the COVID-19 pandemic)

January – April, 2024

  • CEE fellows travel to the U.S. and participate in the practicum.

May – October, 2024

  • Participants implement Community Engagement Projects (CEPs)

Eligibility:

  • Be currently working as a teacher
  • Be a citizen of and reside in the nominating country at the time of the course
  • Not hold dual citizenship in the United States
  • Have the ability to complete academic work at a U.S university level (an advanced level of reading and writing in English, roughly equivalent to CEFR B2)
  • Have at least 8-10 hours per week available to complete course work
  • Have regular access to a reliable, internet-enabled device
  • Have basic technology skills related to creating usernames and passwords, using credentials to log in to secured websites, using email, searching the internet, and accessing and managing electronic files
  • Have the ability to type in English well enough to participate in online discussions and submit written assignments in a timely manner
